What Superfood Can you Eat and Apply to Skin for Fabulous Anti-aging Benefits?

It’s blueberry season and I am very excited to share with you some secrets of blueberries that you might not already know. For example, everyone knows that blueberries are chock full of antioxidants, but did you know blueberries are potent NRF-2 activators? NRF-2 activators stimulate your own cells to make antioxidants and detoxifying enzymes-this is the master switch for health and beauty right here. And NRF-2 activators, as a class of foods and supplements, are one of my strategies for achieving ageless skin that I devoted a lot of space to in my book Cracking the Beauty Code: How to program your DNA for health, vitality, and younger-looking skin.

Did you know blueberry seed oils are a rare source of anti-inflammatory Omega-3 essential fatty acids and that’s why they are so healing and rejuvenating to the skin? Remember, inflammation, especially low-level chronic inflammation that increases with age, is the underlying cause of aging and disease in the body, and wrinkling on the skin. And while fish oil is the most popular Omega-3 essential fatty acid out there, you wouldn’t want to put fish oil on your skin because then you would smell like fish.

Also, it is not widely known that blueberry seed oil is rich in a fraction of the Vitamin E family known as tocotrienols that are even more healing to the skin than the tocopherol fraction of Vitamin E. Tocotrienols are the Vitamin E of the 21st Century and researchers are discovering that tocotrienols are tumor inhibitors, as well as potent antioxidants and anti-inflammatories.

All of these incredibly compelling wrinkle-busting and skin rejuvenating factors are what persuaded me to not only include blueberry seed oil in my Youth Serum formulation, but to include it as my first ingredient which means it is the highest percentage of my formation! There is no other blueberry seed oil-containing product on the market that can claim that!

In addition, I am obsessed with sourcing all of my ingredients from the most pristine locations on earth. I made a wonderful connection on one of my trips to Europe to a conference for personal care product ingredients. I met and connected to my source for clean organic seed oils – a match made in heaven!

All of my organic seed oils (pomegranate, cranberry, pumpkin, and blueberry) are made using a proprietary cold press process that does not involve the use any solvents or chemicals. The same cannot be said about all the other products on the market using seed or any other types of oils. This ensures that my resulting product is non-toxic and unrefined so that all of its rich plant constituents are intact. Jojoba oil, by way of contrast, is popularly used in natural products as the number one ingredient and it is commonly processed using hexane, a solvent. It is also much, much cheaper than blueberry seed oil, which is a very expensive product to source and buy.

And now a tasty Blueberry Crumble recipe that I brought to a party last night to rave reviews!

Blueberry Superfood Crumble

Preheat oven to 375 degrees

Blueberry part- 4 cup of Organic Blueberries
1-2 tablespoons organic sugar
2 tsp lemon juice
Zest of one lemon
1 Tablespoon Arrowroot

Combine in bowl and let sit while you work on the crumble.

Crumble Part-
1 cup Pamela’s Gluten-free baking and pancake mix (NOT dairy free)
4 Tablespoons Kerrygold butter (best grass-fed butter on the earth. Also County Kerry, Ireland is where half my DNA originates)
1/3 cup Organic Coconut Sugar (alas, Ireland has not been kind to coconuts-sourced from the tropics)
A pinch of sea salt

Soften the butter first, then add to the gluten-free mix and coconut sugar. Mix with a fork- it will be crumbly- hence the name Crumble.

Superfood Part-
1/3 cup Qi’a Superfood (Chia, Buckwheat & Hemp cereal- Cranberry Vanilla flavor) This can be found in Trader Joe’s and health food stores.
Pour enough unsweetened non-dairy milk to more than cover (I used Almond/Coconut Blend).
Let it sit for at least ten minutes for the seeds to absorb the liquid.

Combine the Crumble and Superfood Parts together and mix well- this is what will be spread over the blueberries to make the crumble.

Pour the blueberry mix into a 8×8 glass dish and drop the crumble on top. Bake for 30-40 minutes watching the topping for the correct degree of browning.

Note: I attempted to leave this party early so I could take back my Blueberry Superfood Crumble and enjoy the leftovers at home, but the dish was completely empty and several guests sported suspicious blueberry stains on their clothing. This made me very happy that I had chosen to eat dessert first!
