Over ten years ago I began my non-toxic beauty journey in Milan, Italy. You see, I was on the hunt for a non-paraben preservative for my line after the breaking news that parabens were found intact in breast cancer tumors was published. The study did not conclude, nor was it aimed at causally linking parabens to breast cancer, but simply to see if parabens would be found in the breast tumors. Until this study is was not thought that parabens could enter the body, and even if they could, it was thought that the esterases on the skin would metabolize them into something less harmful.
Since that time the sheer amount of parabens found in breast tissue has gone up 400% in twenty years, 99% of all breast tissues sampled have at least one paraben, and 60% have all 5 parabens tested. As the parabens are endocrine disruptors with estrogen mimicking activities, this has deepened the paraben story with respect to its cancer causing potential. The current cancer paradigm demonstrates that parabens enable 6 basic hallmarks of cancer, 2 enabling hallmarks of cancer, and 2 emerging hallmarks of cancer.
I eventually found my non-paraben preservative for my own Youth Serum and look back with astonishment that this was once seen as “fringe”. Because now “Naturals” or “Clean Beauty” is the fastest growing beauty category globally.
Manufacturers and brands are now competing briskly to capture the Clean Beauty space but there is trouble in paradise. Companies either are not clear on what ingredients are harmful, don’t know how to test for the chemicals properly, don’t know what they should be testing for, or they are cutting corners on purpose and fraudulently claiming their products are non-toxic. We call this “Greenwashing”.
No where is this more evident than in nail polish which contains the toxic trifecta of formaldehyde (a carcinogen), toluene (a solvent), and dibutyl phthalate (an endocrine disruptor and surprising breast cancer carcinogen).
In a 2019 large longitudinal study involving over 1 million Danish women, those with the highest levels of dibutyl phthalate were found to have nearly twice the risk of breast cancer. The other phthalates were not found to be associated with breast cancer risk.
I bet you didn’t read about that study in the media.
Nail polish companies are already hard at work removing the dibutyl phthalate due to its association with cancer in lab animals, reproductive harm, and endocrine disruptor status, but the claims of 3-Free, 5-Free, and 7-Free don’t always mean you are getting a product free from those ingredients!
Here are what the Frees mean:
3 Free- free of Formaldehyde, Dibutyl phthalate, toluene
5-Free- free of Formaldehyde, toluene, Dibutyl phthalate, formaldehyde resin, and camphor
7-Free- Formaldehyde, toluene, Dibutyl phthalate, formaldehyde resin, camphor, ethyl tosylamide, and xylene
But a study by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control found free-from toluene in 10/12 of the nail polishes claiming they were free from it, and 5/7 products contained one of the free-from ingredients that they claimed not to have.
So even the Clean Beauty products may have the very substances that they claim to free from!
In my work I see this time and time again.
And this is why I promote educating yourself on toxicants in personal care products, how to read a label, and how to ask the right questions
instead of relying on inaccurate labeling or spurious seals.
One nontoxic seal that I do endorse is the MadeSafe seal because as one of their Science Advisors I know the rigorous process the products have to go through to obtain the designation.
So I invite you to join the Non-Toxic Beauty Revolution and educate yourself about what you are really putting on your bodies.
It’s time to get the truths about non-toxic beauty out there into the world, into the minds and hearts of women everywhere.
Time to come together on one truth.
Learn how to be beautiful- naturally.
I am honored to be one of the experts interviewed for this ground-breaking summit. Perhaps unsurprisingly I will be talking about toxicants in personal care products, some of which you will never see on the label.
ONLY 2% of women think they’re beautiful. Women are on a constant treadmill to “buy their beauty,” and it truly is killing them.
The average woman puts over 100 toxins on her skin every day, some of it is absorbed right into her body.
Babies are born with over 250 chemicals in them before they have even taken their first breath.
Everything we eat, apply and inject into our bodies contributes to our body burden of chemicals and could set off illness at any given moment (and can age us more quickly!) — women are literally dying to be beautiful!
Join me and learn how to transition to self-love and body acceptance and what you can do RIGHT NOW to build your beauty naturally!
