New research has linked environmental pollution with accelerated skin aging. Indeed, the World Health Organization declared pollution to be the world’s biggest environmental health risk, and one of the top contributors to preventable deaths worldwide. Savvy consumers are realizing that it takes more than superficial procedures and slathering on skincare products to repair and protect their skin from the damaging environment. This has created a global and fast growing new market for anti-pollution remedies.
Pollution Ages Your Skin
As discussed in my book Cracking the Beauty Code: How to program your DNA for health, vitality, and younger-looking skin, 90% of visible aging including wrinkles, age spots, loss of elasticity, and rough spots is due to environmental factors such as sun exposure and pollution.
Specifically, air pollution particles such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), volatile organic solvents (VOCs), oxides, particulate matter and cigarette smoke can penetrate the deeper layers of the skin and break down collagen, elastin, and cause a free radical explosion leading to sagging and wrinkling skin.
So, pollution isn’t just settling ON our skin, it’s burrowing deeper into our skin, where it will cause damage and aging if we don’t remove it!
While we think of our skin as our shield from environmental factors, some tiny particulates are so small that they can penetrate the skin anyway. Our lipid layer in the skin can become damaged by pollution or UV radiation as well, which makes the skin barrier less effective at keeping intruders out and may lead to other skin conditions such as rashes.
