What if I told you that hidden chemicals were making you fat and diabetic? Would it make your life easier to know that environmental factors were contributing to your weight condition and it wasn’t all your fault? One of the most popular questions I get from women and men are “How can I lose weight?”
Diets no longer work! Our body burden of chemicals has become so large that our critical hormonal processes that govern our thyroid (master metabolism switch) and metabolic pathways have gone haywire, causing us to gain weight and become diabetic despite our eating habits. Our body burden of chemicals is also the primary driver behind our chronic diseases.
The epidemic of chronic disease (50% of adults have one, 25% have two or more) reduces enjoyment of life, length of life, time in the workforce, and is largely preventable. Reducing body burden is critical to improving health in the era of chronic disease and also cancer risk.
One class of hormone disrupting chemicals is called Phthalates and in this video I explain why they contribute to between 15-25% of diabetes cases, and make you fat. This is huge!
One of the most common sources of phthalates in people is from their personal care products in the form of fragrances. If your personal care product label includes the word “fragrance” or “parfum”, then your product contains phthalates. End of story. You must replace your products with unscented products or products scented with essential oils which will be listed on the label as the plant oil for example, Frankinsense oil, or essential oil of Frankincense.
Do not be fooled by natural sounding product lines such as Say Yes to Carrots Cleanser, which contains synthetic fragrance.
Men are not off the hook either. Phthalates are Endocrine Disruptors, or gender bender chemicals, that have been shown to cause the males in many species to become feminized. In human males, phthalates have been shown to reduce testosterone and result in smaller genitals.
Men’s testosterone has plummeted 50% over the last 50 years as was described in this article written by three Environmental Medicine doctors:
Specifically, one study found that higher levels of phthalates were associated with:
Fragrance has become such a hot topic that I am speaking on it at the ShiftCon conference in two weeks.
